Literacy shapes spaces and futures. The Beyond Words initiative, led by the Cotton On Foundation alongside the Nomzamo Lighthouse Foundation and The Bookery, aims to enhance literacy in South Africa, where 81% of Grade 4 learners struggle with reading. At Masivuke Primary School, Fieldworks Design Group reimagined the library space.

The design emphasises sustainability, adaptability, modularity, and biophilic design, creating a flexible environment. Sustainable materials and enhanced natural light promote durability, while adaptability accommodates diverse learning styles. Biophilic elements connect to nature through textures and a calming colour palette of earthy tones.

This transformation creates a multifunctional learning space that evolves with community needs, providing meaningful literacy opportunities for children in disadvantaged areas. We are proud to partner with The Bookery and Genesis Construction to realise this vision.
